Coach Carl Benn
Coach Carl Benn played 4 years at Lawrence Woodmere Academy where he won 2 State Championships and was named to the All Long Island team as a senior. He then went on to play 4 years at UMASS Lowell where he played a major role in 2 NCAA Division 2 Elite Eight appearances. Carl later played for his native country, Guyana, in the FIBA Caribe Basketball Tournament.
While attempting to earn an opportunity to play overseas, Carl began coaching on the side and found his true purpose in life. He started off by helping kids at his local recreation center in Far Rockaway, Queens, moved on to coaching AAU and travel basketball, and then became the Junior Varsity Head Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach at Lawrence Woodmere Academy.
Years later, Carl founded Far Rockaway Youth Sports Initiative (FRYSI), where he devoted his time and energy to coaching, training, and mentoring less fortunate kids in the under-served, underrepresented neighborhood.
Presently, Carl works fluidly with both amateurs and professionals. Basketball training and coaching is Carl’s passion, but stimulating growth and development in the young people he works with is where he finds his purpose. Making Moves is the platform he built to carry out his mission.
